Stop Shop: Ruth’s House

photo 4

Today’s stop shop is in memory of  all of the women who have lost their lives to domestic violence and dedicated to the ones still fighting to get out or have gotten out and are working to put the pieces of their lives back together. Since 1977 the House of Ruth Maryland has provided assistance for victims of domestic violence within the state. The organization’s shelter, 24-hour hotline, counseling, outreach, training, and legal services have helped more than 100,000 victims. In January of 2011, The House of Ruth opened Ruth’s Closet to further its mission. Ruth’s Closest is a sophisticated resale boutique featuring new and gently used clothing and accessories for women. All of the proceeds go to support programs and services for the victims of domestic violence. I stopped by if not last month then the month before last and after hearing that people still weren’t quite in “the know” about the boutique, I decided I would blog to try and spread the word.

The store is located at 9131 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills, MD. You can find it right in the back of the Valley Village Shopping Center. If you’re a women that works in the corporate world or you are looking for quality brands at prices you can afford then please check them out. The clothing in the store comes from the donations they receive and the store is staffed by the sweetest volunteers. Below you’ll find what I purchased the day I stopped in…

All of those items and an additional sweater for under $50 if I remember correctly. What a deal! There was this cute blazer in there that I wanted badly but I’d be swimming in a size 6 so I had to leave it. I sure hope someone picked it up and is wearing it happily.

Project Runway: Season 11

It’s back!!! One of my favorite reality shows, “Project Runway” is in it’s 11th season and it premieres tonight. This season is all about the teams and judging by the commercial I can see the participants are just as nervous as I am for them. Check out the preview.

Two teams of 8, one winner per team and one winner from the losing team is OUT. Can you say yikes? Really, teams? Now I know teamwork makes the dream work but this is fashion and in the end there can still only be one winner. Each individual has their own style and desires to have their own line but now they’ll have to find ways to compromise and fuse their ideas together just to progress in the competition. Why Heidi? Why Tim?! Why Heidi? Why Nina? Hey Zac! This is definitely a twist and I’m eager to see how it works. I could hardly stand group projects in school so I don’t even want to imagine how it works in fashion unless they’re all working for one brand which they’ll have to pretend to do in order to win I guess, huh? Sheeshers.

Here are the designers for this season:

After going through everyone’s portfolio and watching a few videos I have picked a couple of people I like and will be watching.

Michelle has an extremely tiny closest in her home and a personality I could see myself getting along with if I were on the show. I pointed out the closest because anyone who can make her closest work for them has got to be cool. She doesn’t do egos so hopefully there aren’t any big ones on her team. Her love of the color chartreuse makes her an easy favorite on my list. I don’t know what it is about that color but I can never get enough!

EMILY is probably my favorite. She lives in Falls Church, VA so she’s the “home team” or as close to one as I’ll get to root for. I would love borrowing things from her closet, her home feels very sincere and I love that she loves sweets as much as me! Aside from all of that I think her designs are creative and there’s a leather jacket she has with a small V neck in the back, that is the business. Oh and her dog is the cutest!

Benji is from the down under and I admire his love of mixing textiles both modern and vintage. His sense of style is quirky for a guy and it reminds me of an old movie but the title won’t come to me right now.

Ok I said Emily is my favorite and she is but Samantha (Sammy B) lives close to my heart. She mixes prints and patterns and textures PLUS she hearts bright colors. Her style mixed with Em’s would almost sum up mine. She has a lot of everything, fabrics, accessories, clothes, etc… just like me!

Although Richard only presented like 3 pieces during his casting, he has a good eye when it comes to thrifting and he seems rather chill and easy going. He’ll be a good person to add to a group and I’m interested to see what he has up his sleeve bc his portfolio was attention getting. Reminded me of Prince and that old girl group Vanity 6. He also has all of those cds in his studio and I love me some music when I’m crafting, sewing, cooking, shooo anytime really lol.

I can’t say I understand Stanley’s vision but there is a black and several shades of green boatneck peplum top with gathered shoulders and a zipper in his portfolio that I think would look terrific on me. Oh and I love how his closet is color coordinated bc I am the same way with my t-shirts and his apartment is filled with artwork, love!

Ok, ok, ok, I can’t go on because I guarantee you that I could and I would find something I like about everyone. For now you know the few I’ll have my eye on but things could change. For now, I hope you’ll all be watching with me tonight. Maybe tomorrow I’ll come back and share my thoughts about the show. Have an awesome thursday!

Sweet Feet: Sheer Stripe Sock

GREETINGS!!!! The weather is set to reach the low 60s today and it has me thinking about the spring… yes, I know, it’s January and the cold will make a return sooner than later. I’m deciding to live in present and presently my mind is over the winter. With that said, I’ve begun developing my spring “look” and in looking around for key accessories I came across these white and sheer socks on ASOS.

Sexy or fun and funky depending on what you pair them with. All I ask is that I not see these socks on people who are wearing sandals… not the thong sandals at least. I want to see floral and bright or pastel flats with these socks. They make me think of “West Side Story,” “Oklahoma,” and “HairSpray” all in different ways.

Well, in other news, the RAVENS won their game yesterday placing a permanent smile on my face! Hope you all have a fabulous Monday and wear smiles as your accessory too.

Thrifted Find of the Week

Greetings!! Thrifted Tuesday is almost over but I couldn’t let the clock strike 12 without sharing my newest $4 find! Ordinarily I skip past the bag/purse section of thrift stores. Bags are dingy, dirty, and I can see germs embedded in them. Not that you can’t wipe them down but they’ve never been worth the effort. This shoulder bag was different…

The size is a little smaller than a sheet of paper and it’s leather, very sturdy with the only marks being pen under the front flap. I’ll clean it, spray the gold closure so it pops again and voila! New bag.

What do you think? For $4 would you have left it behind?

Two Steps Ahead: Pre-Fall 2013

If you come across pre-fall collections you’ll find that you most likely own a few of the trendy pieces seen making it easier for you to fill the gap between seasons and still be ‘in’. You’ll also see a few slight tweaks made to keep your eyes dancing and awaiting the Fall collection. Take a look below to see what I mean…

As I look through my own closet I see a few of these things. Maxi dress w/ split? Check. I never did find a leather jacket I liked. No I take that back, I did and I left it where I found it… hoping to find something better, smh. Wide leg glitter/shimmer/sequin pants? No but I have sequin shorts and leggings. J. Crew had a super cute black and white coat that I tried on and I didn’t get it but I have several black and white blouses to make up for that. Tribal vest? Check. Faux fur vest? Check. I love that green parka in the Jason Wu collection so that might be the one thing I set my sights on. Oh and something that closely resembles that Alice + Olivia dress wouldn’t hurt either. I’m not big on pre-fall and resort collections but I love the challenge of looking though my wardrobe to see how I can put my own twist on what collections are doing.

Have a great weekend!
